Stord is a municipality situated in the Sunnhordland region within Vestland county in Western Norway, at the gateway to the Hardangerfjord. The town center is called Leirvik.

The municipality encompasses the southern part of Stord Island and has a population of around 18,000 residents. To the north of Stord lies the Fitjar municipality. Bergen is the closest city to the north, while Haugesund and Stavanger are the nearest cities to the south.

How to travel to Stord?

The coastal road E39 traverses the island. The triangle connection, featuring two suspension bridges and Northern Europe’s longest subsea tunnel, has provided the island with a route to the mainland in the south, and to the neighboring municipality of Bømlo in the west.

You can catch a ferry from Halhjem and Austevoll to Sandvikvåg. From Kvinnherad, there is a ferry service from Ranavik to Skjersholmane. Direct flights to Stord are available from Oslo/Gardermoen. Additionally, express boats connect Stord with Bergen, Stavanger, Kvinnherad, and Bømlo.
